The beautiful University City of Oxford

including fascinating Jewish sites and stories, a visit to
a top university college and a glorious trip on the river
(plus Harry Potter sites if you wish!)

I offer you an enthralling full day tour to Oxford, known as the City of Dreaming Spires and boasting so much surviving medieval beauty.

Famous the world over not just for its University with 38 colleges and outstanding architecture everywhere but also Oxford’s significant place in Jewish history featuring intriguing Jewish sites and stories throughout this charming city. Today, Oxford is one of England’s most delightful attractions for overseas visitors and the British too!  And before leaving Oxford at the end of the afternoon, there’s a special treat ...it's a Traditional Afternoon English Cream Tea (or Coffee) with tasty scones, clotted cream and jam and it is at England’s oldest Tea Shop which was founded in 1651 by a Jewish gentleman (see below).

There’s a choice of how we travel to Oxford ...either we take together a one hour journey by train or we travel in a comfortable air-conditioned chauffeured vehicle which, along with me, will collect you from your accommodation and drop you off there at the end of the tour or elsewhere in central London if preferred.

Just some of the captivating sites and stories on this tour:

  • Stroll through the magnificent 13th century Merton College, Oxford’s first true university college, and admire the amazing medieval architecture of this building while discovering how an Oxford Jewish man was responsible for its birth
  • Enjoy a short pleasurable trip on a punt (just like a gondola in Venice) along Oxford’s quaint River Cherwell as we pass picturesque scenes of interest
  • Tread cobbled alleyways teeming with world famous grand buildings in distinctive golden stone while I relate lots of interesting tales;  learn of the roller coaster existence of Oxford’s 1000 year old Jewish community and be introduced to colourful Jewish characters from the past who left their mark on the city
  • Standing amidst Oxford’s pleasant Rose Garden I will reveal to you how this tranqil site was once a medieval Jewish cemetery and the last resting place of a remarkable lady …remarkable both for her business dealings and her love life
  • Take a suggested lunch break at the Bear Inn, one of Oxford’s oldest pubs dating back to 1242.  As well as tasty fayre on offer you can relax within its quaint oak-timbered saloon or outside in the garden area. Even here I recount some charming anecdotes
  • And for those Harry Potter fans I will point out several magical sites that inspired the Harry Potter series
  • We end the tour with a complimentary Traditional Afternoon English Cream Tea (or Coffee) with tasty scones, clotted cream and jam …and it is at England’s oldest Tea Shop which was founded in 1650 by a Jewish entrepreneur who took the greatest risk of his life

You have a choice for travelling to Oxford…

Travel by train with my meeting you at a central London station for the one hour journey to Oxford Station from where it’s a five minute taxi ride to the starting point of the tour.  At the end of the tour we take a taxi back to Oxford Station for the return to central London.

Travel by executive car or minivan/people carrier (vehicle subject to how many in the party) with the driver and me collecting you from your accommodation for the start of the tour and returning you there or elsewhere in central London if preferred at the end of the day.
